TOP OF THE POPS

user-744

Hi All

Quite new to get_iplayer, which is great, but I'm a little mystified about the vagaries of Top Of The Pops.

I know that the BBC regularly show two versions of the 1979 repeats, a 30 minute one for early evening scheduling purposes, and a full length one broadcast later at night.

For the episode dated 15/11/1979, the one broadcast early evening was 28m 58s. The longer version ran for exactly 40 minutes.

I have tried three times to download the file http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b04...s-15111979 and each time it is the shorter one that has downloaded even though that same file on the iplayer website plays the full 40 minute version.

And idea how that happens - and, more importantly, how to get the full version?

I'll fix that for next release. For now, use
Code:
--versions=default2
to get alternate version.

Now that it's gone past 7 days, there is no default2 option available for it, but the full 40 minute version has now moved to the standard default option.

So if you run the same command as you did before you should now get the full 40 min version downloaded.

This would probably be a time when a
Code:
--vpid
switch would be useful. Then you can tell get_iplayer which version you want to download.

As the 30 min version dosn't seem to show on iPlayer at all, is there an easy way to find its vpid? If someone wanted the 30 min version instead, the
Code:
--vpid
switch would then allow them to do this.

The command would look something like this:
(This is for the 40 min version because I cant find the vpid for the 30 min one)
Code:
get_iplayer --modes=best --pid b04pvhmr --vpid b04q02dn

A default2 version still appears for me with
Code:
--pid
in v2.90, so you've gone wrong somewhere. I've already said elsewhere that I personally will never implement a
Code:
--vpid
option. There is no need for it, and it's a support headache I don't need. If you can't wait, go get the latest code from GitHub. See Git HEAD section in installation wiki page. The shortened version can then be downloaded with
Code:
--versions=shortened
, if you really don't want that extra 10 minutes.

user-585

I am also on 2.90. I can't work out why the default2 option isn't showing for me though.

Here's my output:
Code:
C:\Program Files (x86)\get_iplayer>get_iplayer --modes=best --pid b04pvhmr --inf

Is the plan with the changes you have now made that get_iplayer will always download the longer version of a programme unless told otherwise?

Sorry, no clue. My only guess is that maybe one of the necessary files failed to download. Try with
Code:
--verbose
and see if any further clues appear.

No. I just fixed a bug in discriminating between the default version and alternate versions.

user-585

Nothing obvious that I can see.

Output attached.

I can see both default and default2 in the
Code:
--info
for yesterday's one though http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b04...s-29111979 with default2 being the longer one.

Is there an easy way to tell if get_iplayer is downloading the longer or shorter version of a programme or if there are more than 1 version available? I know Click has a 15 minute and a 30 minute version but that always seems to download the longer one.

It's not always obvious that there are options for different programme lengths available. I hadn't noticed this with Top of the Pops until AlJoEdin pointed it out.

Sorry, still no clue, and still can't duplicate.

You've answered your own question.

user-585

I think it could be that although I am on 2.90, I haven't updated from the git HEAD for a while so there were probably changes that you had made there since I last updated which kept default2 showing but I hadn't got on my copy. I have now updated from the git HEAD again and I can see
Code:
versions: default,shortened
for both last weeks and this weeks Top of the Pops.

user-2

No, even v2.90 as released still showed multiple versions. But as you can see, that is dead code that has already been replaced.

user-744

Thanks! - that was a perfect solution

user-747

oh wow, i usually watch Top of the pops and then download a copy to watch and have been doing this for a while without really watching what I have recorded. I now realise i have been watching the 40 min version and downloading the 30 minute version for ages :-(

user-747

sorry , how do i get the longer version? what the text i need to enter? thanks
