Have the BBC broken us again?

I've replaced the .pl file with the dev version on my windows system and it works OK if a bit slow and with warnings.

Radio is fine - TV I have to input the direct URL and click "record" - I can live with that for now.

@user-1202, which fixes are you referring to. If to the ones I described, then yes they do. as I did them on my Windows 7 laptop earlier this morning, at least it will as long as you get the right files from the development version.

Thanks @user-1162 just one typo:
I think you mean get_iplayer.cgi rather than get_iplayer.cfg

user-1202

Hi there
I'll try this on a Linux VM -- I was hoping that a fix for Windows would be available.
It would be a shame if get_iplayer died -- and using Youtube is a bit of an abomination.

I'm not a specialist here but someone presumabably could create a Windows.EXE file as the source code is available --apart from EXCEL macros I haven't a clue about coding.

I was hoping also to get the BBC4 Icelandic series  trapped on to computer -- I also would like a load of BBC Radio 3 programs to listen later.

@user-1162 -- I think I missed any Windows version in the development branch --Monday morning -- perhaps I need new glasses !!!

Thanks

Have you tried doing it from the command line. On my Windows machine, using the command line I now get the full speed of my fibre connection whereas with previous versions I only used to get 1.2 MBps or just under 10 Mbps. See one of my posts further back where I list the two commands. One is for a Windows shortcut (the shortcut's 'start in folder' should be X:\Program Files (86)/get_iplayer where X: is the drive with your Program Files folder) and the other is command line for downloading the programme using the url or the PID.

NOTE: Seems like everything is back to normal again and both 2.94 and 2.95 work.

@user-1162: confirmation that your workaround is working for linux too. Cheers!

user-1162

~forget it. :) my bad. you're right. Doing too many things at once, one of which included modifying an actual cfg file in another program. lol.

As it is a .pl file (i.e. a perl script file using the perl executable installed when you installed get_iplayer) it is the same one for both Windows and Linux. So just download the zip file from the develop branch, extract get_iplayer and rename to get_iplayer.pl and copy to your get_player folder along with the get_player.cgi from the zip file.

Good to know. Is there any merit in putting back the old v2.94 versions of the two get_iplayer.* files?

user-109

Things seem to be back to normal - well I'm getting radio and TV OK here using 2.94

user-1162

@user-801, depends, unless you come across some serious bugs, it is a development version after all, I would say no. So it is down to you. I'm lucky as I have multiple laptops at my disposable so I have 2.94 on some and 2.95 (dev version) on one, so if I have problems with one version I can just switch to a different version on another laptop.

Ahhhh.... thanks again! :)

@user-1162: Thanks again. I'll leave it as is and instead enjoy the warm glow of having the best app in the world working again :)

user-1202

Hi there
especially @user-1162 -- got radio working again W10 laptop fine with decent download speed.

Thanks for the info --hopefully this will be moved to the standard branch if it works for a few days --I'm sure the change this time is something to do with the launch of the BBC Store.

Cheers --and thanks. Some of us aren't quite so computer savvy but willing to learn from the experts so expect some "noob" queries at times.

If I'm in Wales or in your part of the neighbourhood - I'll buy you some beers !!!! Thanks again --all working.

Hey, we were all noobs at one time. If you don't ask you don't learn and IMO the only really stupid question is the one not asked.

I'm keeping 2.95 for now. TV shows download much much faster. I can't believe the difference....

Great, thanks for all the help everyone. Nice to have an old friend back and working properly again. Take care everyone, laters.

user-1162

@user-926, same here, I went from 1.2 MBps/9.6 Mbps on earlier versions like 2.94 to 9.5 MBps/76 Mbps on 2.95. I don't mind in the least risking the possible odd bug or two in the development version for that type of improvement.

user-1204

Now working as before for me - no changes/fixes applied.

user-1202

Hi there

Two laptops-- I have decent Wifi connection -- laptop 1 old version  2.94 2.9Mb/s Laptop 2  2.95 - development version 40.9 Mb/s  --both laptops running W10 X64 pro and approx. same processor etc. Same Wifi card in both laptops.

Much faster downloads with 2.95

Cheers

Which modes are we seeing a speed improvement on? Flash or HLS?
