Query re 'Downloading with --pid still works'

user-1556

From forum post
Quote:Downloading with --pid still works, but the programme metadata will be unreliable and file names may not be as expected. For the moment, just don't use get_iplayer.
If the metadata is faulty will the programme not be playable? An incorrect filename would not bother me.

I am unable to download with --pid since the BBC's action.
Code:
.../get_iplayer.pl --pid=b08hl5f9 --type=radio --output "/home/myprogs/"
... fails to download the file, with output:

Code:
WARNING: rdf URL contained no data
WARNING: PID URL contained no RDF data. Trying to record PID directly.
INFO: Trying pid: b08hl5f9 using type: radio
INFO: Trying to stream pid using type radio
INFO: pid not found in radio cache
Matches:

WARNING: Could not download programme metadata from http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08hl5f9.xml
ERROR: Failed to get version pid metadata from iplayer site
Thanks for clarification.

Works fine here. Those warnings have nothing to do with the actual file download.

Actually, the "Failed to get" message suggests you are using an obsolete version of get_iplayer.  Follow our instructions to provide a full report so we can see what is happening on your machine.

I'm running Debian Jessie and GiP 2.94, which worked fine until yesterday.
A while ago I tried installing 2.97 from 'get-iplayer_2.97-1_all.deb', but the Debian package manager was going to insist on uninstalling a host of stuff including Gnome desktop and LibreOffice, so I abandoned that idea and just copied the 2.94 GiP files which I had backed up from my previous Debian Wheezy system.
I have installed rtmpdump, atomicparsley, ffmpeg 3.0 and id3v2.
I guess I'll have to wait and see what the BBC does.
Thanks for your replies.

You can always install get_iplayer manually. See documentation in wiki.

I updated to the latest get_iplayer and downloading with the pid works fine. The file name isn't correct (easily renamed), transferred the file to my phone and it plays perfectly.

Thanks for suggesting manual install. V2.99 working ok.
