unable to download one specific HD program

is offered in HD. However, when I download modes=best it only grabs the SD version. Using --info you can see flashhd1,flashhd2 are not available.

It seems the only HD offered using get_iplayer is audiodescribed, otherwise we can only grab the SD version. Any ideas?

Works fine here. HD doesn't always appear right away.

user-696

that's weird, it took a long time for the compression operation to finish. Thanks for the tip.

There is no compression operation in get_iplayer.  HD video is re-muxed and tagged, both of which can be slow for such large files, depending on the resources available on your system. They are in essence less-efficient file copy operations.

sorry that's not what I meant. I know get_iplayer performs no compression. I meant to say the media platform Elemental Technologies created for the BBC that does perform the compression was stalling for some reason. Typically its compressing in parallel with the streaming broadcast to reduce the time it takes to fully compress the streaming file for iplayer playback.

It looks like this programme was recorded live for iPlayer.

When the BBC do this, the programme will usually become available within 15 minutes or so of the actual broadcast finishing. The first version to appear on iPlayer will sort of be a rough edit of the programme which will probably have some of the BBC's introduction on and some adverts afterwards as broadcast. This seems to get processed into all versions of SD streams (both HLS and RTMP) and an HD stream for HLS but not RTMP.

Usually within an hour or so it will be properly trimmed to get rid of most of this overrun from both sides. This will then be processed into all HLS and RTMP stream types including flashhd.

So with anything live or recorded "off air" for iPlayer, you will probably find a bit of a delay before flashhd streams become available.

Most pre-recorded programmes are not done this way so all versions usually become available quicker.
