Blurry download when using tvmode=best

user-1071

OS:  Windows 7
Browser:  IE and Firefox

I always use --tvmode=best when downloading.  Worked fine until yesterday.  No matter what TV program I choose, the file is not in HD.  When viewing on the BBC website, the program plays fine in HD.  Even when viewing in SD, it is clearer than the downloaded file.  I even re-downloaded a file from a few days ago to compare - old file is clear as can be, file from today looks like a bad copy off a VHS tape.

Any thoughts?

Thank you in advance.

Have you tried with --modes=hlsbest?

Does the same thing happen if you use that in place of --tvmode=best

user-1071

Thanks for your prompt response.  Here's what I tried (in the order I tried it):
1) Before getting your response,  I tried this:  get_iplayer --prefs-add --modes=best and then tried to download
Still blurry - at times pixelated

2) I tried your suggestion of --modes=hlbest.  It did not record. Message was:

3) I tried --modes=flashhigh.  It did not record.  Message was:

Next time, have the courtesy not to dump a gigantic log spew into your post.  We give you the formatting tools - use them. Even better - put the log in a .txt file attachment.  Also take the time to check your typing: it's "hlsbest" not "hlbest". And as for your downloads, we can't help you with that.  You're not in the UK, so you're only going to get low quality video, if even that. If you have been using a VPN to get around those restrictions, it has been rumbled.  We can't help you with that, either.

user-1071

As you can see, I'm new to posting here.  I wasn't aware of "formatting tools."  There's no need to get snippy.  I didn't see any rules about what can be included in the post.  I've seen other posts with logs in them - I was only trying to provide enough info so that the question can be answered rather than having a bunch of posts asking for follow-up information.  Also, some people don't want the bother of opening an attachment.

Thank you for catching the typo, but --modes=hlsbest didn't work either.

Downloads were fine the day before - less than 12 hours later, they are poor quality.

And please do not make assumptions about where you think I live.  You are incorrect.

I appreciate the site admin's speedy and polite reply - do you have any other suggestions?

user-30

If you take a look in the forum rules you'll see some pointers with regards to formatting:

/announcement-1.html

Whilst we can't know your exact location, what's not incorrect is that you are using a VPN, LiquidVPN and one of their London servers to be precise. The IP you are using to register, connect and comment here on this site belongs to LiquidVPN and it's trivial for me to look it up.

If it's trivial for me, it's trivial for the BBC too and they've begun blocking known VPN's:

http://arstechnica.co.uk/business/2015/1...o-iplayer/

As Dinky said, we can't help you with this issue as you're using a VPN.

user-1071

Thank you for those links.   I use a VPN for privacy when posting to message boards such as these because, as you demonstrated so aptly in your post, it is easy to discern private information.  Again, please refrain from making assumptions.

If I had been using the VPN when downloading, I would not have been able to download at all.  I would have received an error message about not being in the UK.

user-30

If you tried without a VPN and you are UK based then I don't know why you'd get low quality downloads.

I downloaded the file without problem using --modes=best. It appears to me to be a bit 'soft' and not exactly the highest quality but not worse than the SD version.

If you are receiving an unwatchable file I'm not sure why in particular that might be. Perhaps you are getting the file from a different CDN? You can 'exclude suppliers' (--exclude-supplier with options akamai, limelight, level3 or bidi) to rule out one troublesome CDN but that's a long shot and I wouldn't expect that to work.

I suppose you could post the output of --prefs-show here to just to see if you have something in your preferences that is set incorrectly.

NOTE - If you are attempting to download the same file again, you'll need to add the --force flag to the command to do so and make sure no .partial.flv files are hanging around in the download folder as that can interfere too.
