HD options missing for available programme

user-585

Hi,
I've just found this on iPlayer which is available and plays in HD but has no HD options available in get_iplayer.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00...nd-monkeys

--info shows:

get_iplayer Output:

modes:          default: flashhigh1,flashhigh2,flashlow1,flashlow2,flashstd1,fla
shstd2,flashvhigh1,flashvhigh2,hlshigh1,hlshigh2,hlshigh3,hlshigh4,hlslow1,hlslo
w2,hlslow3,hlslow4,hlsstd1,hlsstd2,hlsstd3,hlsstd4,hlsvhigh1,hlsvhigh2,hlsvhigh3
,hlsvhigh4,subtitles1
modes:          original: flashhigh1,flashhigh2,flashlow1,flashlow2,flashstd1,fl
ashstd2,flashvhigh1,flashvhigh2,hlshigh1,hlshigh2,hlshigh3,hlshigh4,hlslow1,hlsl
ow2,hlslow3,hlslow4,hlsstd1,hlsstd2,hlsstd3,hlsstd4,hlsvhigh1,hlsvhigh2,hlsvhigh
3,hlsvhigh4,subtitles1

Any ideas?

Did you watch it? It might say 'Watch in HD' but when that's selected it certainly isn't HD when you play it. Not for me at least.

Seems like a simple categorisation mistake.

Things have changed on the BBC side with the advent of their Video Factory initiative.  HLS HD streams will return in get_iplayer 2.95.  It is already implemented in the development version. There is no HD RTMP stream in this case - the web site is using HDS.

Q: When is HD not HD?  A: When the BBC says "Watch in HD".  On the web site that now gets you 960x540 2800kbps 50fps video. The BBC are calling this HD and asserting that it's equivalent to the older 720p streams because of the higher frame rate. get_iplayer will have to adopt the BBC newspeak to track with the iPlayer site, but it's going to be confusing because: a) the notion of any video <720p being called HD will seem a bit alien; b) the older 720p 25fps streams are still around for the moment. OTOH, In terms of bandwidth the old and new HD streams are roughly equivalent, which is the more important metric for get_iplayer. Plus, the new 720p streams are also 50fps, which makes for ridiculously big downloads - get ready for "vhd" mode.

Thanks Dinky.

There are still hlshd1 and flashhd1 streams being processed for most programmes. Watchdog (b06h7jlg) from last night is one example.

But why are flashhd and hlshd not available in this instance? Is it just a processing glitch for this one programme? Other programmes still seem to be processing into all modes as far as I can see so far.

In 2.94 the RTMP stream data is used to find the HLS HD streams.  No RTMP HD, no HLS HD. That has changed with the advent of Video Factory streams.  As for why there is no RTMP HD stream, who knows?  They haven't used it on the web site for some time, so maybe they just didn't bother producing RTMP HD for this programme. The CBeebies crowd aren't going to be worried about the extra pixels. Stream data for kiddie progs can be squirrelly sometimes as well, for reasons unknown.
