I've been downloading radio programmes via the iPlayer Radio app on my Android.

I've noticed the file sizes are roughly double what I'd expect (ie 140Mb for a 1 hour programme) - leading me to believe that the downloads are encoded at 256kbps, rather than the current streaming maximum of 128kbps.

Is there any way get_iplayer can download these larger, higher quality files?

320k streams available for Radio 3 only. App downloads have DRM, so not available.

This was for a Radio 1 programme.

Load the iPlayer Radio app, find a 1 hour programme - you'll see the file size is 140MB.

A 140MB file that's an hour long equates to a bitrate of somewhere around 280kbps.....

Your arithmetic is a bit off, but it doesn't matter.  Nor does the source channel matter.  Programmes with DRM are not available with get_iplayer and never will be.

Are the download versions actually a higher bitrate though?

The app downloads appear to be 320kbps. I mentioned this to Vangelis over on the mailing list and they did a write up with more detail:
