Please forget the two questions while I try to help myself. DP was indeed correct I was in fact running version 2.90. I am now attempting to update to the latest 2.91.

Problem solved!!

I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has responded to my ramblings this afternoon. It turns out that I wasn't running the latest version and as soon as I updated it everything worked as I was told it would. I can only apologise for wasting so much of your valuable time. Sincerely though I really do appreciate everybody who tried to help me this afternoon and solved my problem. Thank you so very much.

My settings were out of date - I use a cron script to run the PVR and it has the old mode setting, but as you saw I tried with the new options.

Drat - seems I'm on V2.90 and the nux-desktop repo has dependancy errors.

Guess it's build from source time again :(

I did have some old settings - I use a cron job to run a script that does the pvr call and it had the old mode settinngs. However I did update these first of all then tried the out of date settings in the wiki for luck.

Seems the nux-desktop repo has dependency problems so looks like I have to build from source again. :(

If you had 2.90 on CentOS/RHEL, you must have installed it manually since it was never offered in nux-dextop. No reason you can't do the same for 2.91.

I'm on 2.90 and looking at Top Gear: Series 22 - Episode 5 I couldn't download anything except subtitles.
So I ran get_iplayer -i "top gear" and it told me:

get_iplayer Output:

Matches:
1709: Top Gear: Series 22 - Episode 5, BBC Two, Cars & Motors,Entertainment,Fa
ctual,Review Shows, default
INFO: File name prefix = Top_Gear_Series_22_-_Episode_5_b05469cm_default
<snip>
modes: default: subtitles1
modes: default2: flashhd1,flashhd2,flashhigh1,flashhigh2,flashlow1,flas
hlow2,flashstd1,flashstd2,flashvhigh1,flashvhigh2,rtsphd1,rtsphd2,rtsphigh1,rtsp
high2,rtsplow1,rtsplow2,rtspstd1,rtspstd2,rtspvhigh1,rtspvhigh2,subtitles1
modes: default3: flashhd1,flashhd2,flashhigh1,flashhigh2,flashlow1,flas
hlow2,flashstd1,flashstd2,flashvhigh1,flashvhigh2,rtsphd1,rtsphd2,rtsphigh1,rtsp
high2,rtsplow1,rtsplow2,rtspstd1,rtspstd2,rtspvhigh1,rtspvhigh2,subtitles1

So something is squiffy about version default
so get_iplayer 1709 --version=default2 --modes=best -g seems to be doing the trick

user-585

Yes in 2.90 there was sometimes a default and default2 version of programmes and default2 was the only one that worked. This has been fixed in version 2.91 and the current problem which means that you sometimes have to use --playlist-metadata to download a programme should be fixed when 2.92 is released.

You really do need to keep get_iplayer up to date at the moment as there are a lot of changes going on.

user-869

Just a note, but this issue with Top Gear not downloading was a BBC issue, and not a get_iplayer issue. :)

user-688

I had the same download failures starting just a few days ago. I thought that back over Xmas I had already updated to 2.91 but (on using the command line check as suggested above) found I was still on 2.90. Used the command line update command and all seems well again now. Thanks.

Anything get on good only subtitles download failed in every title.
Is it normal?
Today, I just download " Treasures of Ancient Greece' in HD version.

Treasures_of_Ancient_Greece_-_2._The_Classical_Revolution_b05qqgrr_default.mp4,
only missing the subtitles.
