Hi I hope there is an answer for this!

I have had not problem in choosing where to save mu files too.

What I'd like to do is to save directly to an external hdd to a path such as...
[drive]:\get_iplayer\new
I have something like this already set up but what I'd like to achieve is if the hdd is not available, then for get_iplayer to save to a default path.
Is this possible and if so how!

That is not possible. You would need to create a wrapper script to select the output directory and then launch get_player with the correct options.
