I re-installed get_iplayer last night. Latest version 2.83 and 2.0.6 vlcplayer but still I get this:


It goes through all the options and then finishes with those lines. It seems the problem is the flvstreamer:

Which version of rtmpdump or flvstreamer are you using? The “WARNING: rtmpdump/flvstreamer 1.8 or later is required – please upgrade” error seems to suggest you have an old version.

The files which came with get_iplayer were the latest versions already but I downloaded the 2.4 version anyway. Before installing last night I removed the old version rmtp stuff when I got the option. I also added the latest flvstreamer to the RTMPDump directory. My guess was this is being used when I run get_iplayer:


Every time I run one of the exes it screams for a hostname. Any ideas of what I should remove or add greatly welcome. Thanks.

I’m not that familiar with get_iplayer on Windows, so I’m not sure I can be much help. You don’t need both flvstreamer and rtmpdump though, they do the same job; you might as well delete flvstreamer because it’s basically just an old version of rtmpdump. Where did you download the Windows get_iplayer installer from?

I got the files from http://www.infradead.org/get_iplayer_win...latest.exe if I remember correctly.

I have removed flvstreamer – it makes no difference. So I have narrowed it down to the same issue I had from the start.


I checked – there is not rtmpdump apart from this version, which is clearly newer than 1.8 …

Any ideas? Thanks.

When you run get_iplayer try using the --rtmpdump option, followed by the path to RTMPDump. I think it might be trying to use an older version, which is why you get the “1.8 or later is required – please upgrade” error.

Thanks for your patience.

I removed everything from the RTMPDump directory, downloaded this:

and dropped the files into said directory. I then pointed get_iplayer to the directory via –rtmpdump as suggested and still get the original error (WARNING: rtmpdump/flvstreamer 1.8 or later is required – please upgrade).

I do not get this at all.

Also, run the altered command below to try and re-download that programme you want. The command below includes the --verbose command which if I remember rightly will let us see a bit more of what is going on...

Two things:

1) You are running version 2.83 of get_iplayer and you need to revert the changes you made to SWF verification in order to circumvent the error code 256 failure under the last version of get_iplayer.

2) There is a possibility here that somehow during the upgrade procedure, the updated RTMPdump was not included in PATH.

I would recommend first that you completely uninstall get_iplayer. Then, reinstall it from the Windows installer here.

Reinstalling should take care of number 1, and might have an effect on number 2. Try it and report your findings. If you have a lot of PVR's saved and wish to retain your download history, you can keep them by copying the 'pvr' folder and 'download_history' file from the .get_iplayer hidden folder within your user directory, and then pasting them across after the re-install.

Based on your reply above, the path to your .get_iplayer folder should be: C:\Users\hammersteen\.get_iplayer

Completely uninstalled all components, deleted get_iplayer directory, deleted system files. Restarted system. Downloaded everything from your link. Result:

A few additions to SP's instructions:

1. When you uninstall get_iplayer you are offered the choice of deleting your preferences, etc. If you did not elect to do so, you will need to take an additional step to remove the now-unnecessary fix for "error code 256". See the "Reverting Your Changes" section in this document.

2. After uninstalling, delete the directory if it wasn't deleted by the uninstaller. It may not be crucial, but it ensures a clean slate for re-install.

3. If it still doesn't work after re-install, don't be tempted to monkey around with the installed files. Your original problem had nothing to do with the rtmpdump installation per se, and then you somehow wound up with no rtmpdump at all, so leave the installation directory alone while you test things.

4. After re-installing, do as SP instructed and run your download command with the option. Also send the output from the command below, which shows system preferences created by the installer:


5. If you're having the same problem after re-install, open the get_iplayer command prompt (Get_iPlayer shortcut from the Start menu) and run:


Something on your system is interfering with the launch of rtmpdump.exe from within get_iplayer, and this test command attempts to mimic that environment.

Yep, that's annoying alright.

Perhaps we'll need to specify the path to RTMPDump within get_iplayer's options. Not sure why that need would have arisen, but we can give it a try.

The following command should add the exact path to RTMPDump to your preferences:


You may need to adjust it for your particular install, but give it a try and let me know what happens when you attempt a download after adding this preference.

You haven't accurately referenced RTMPdump in your preferences, which you need to do.

If you take a look at the first few lines after the output of the options command you pasted in your last reply, you'll see that Atomic Parsley and Lame etc all reference an .exe.

You need to do the same with RTMPdump and reference the actual .exe, not the directory.

If you install is in 'Program Files' directory, this should work:

andrew: I'm sorry to contradict SP, but your original problem probably had nothing to do with your preferences, so there is no need to change them. As you've seen, get_iplayer will warn you if it can't locate rtmpdump. Delete this file:


to return your installation to a clean state. Then do as I recommended in #4 and #5 in my earlier post. As I said there, you have a problem that is external to get_iplayer, something that is interfering with the execution of rtmpdump by get_iplayer. The root cause is something peculiar to your machine, and there are several possibilities, so you need to run those tests so we can look for clues that might narrow the field.

Ah, I didn't see DP massive post (I must be blind or have posted at the same time or something) so ignore me and go with their advice.

I tried #4 and #5. As I said in my previous post - nothing makes a difference. My theory is that it uses the right rtmpdump.exe (it is the only such file on my system as I established early on (equally flvstreamer.exe)) so we are missing something else.

Let me be explicit: You need to show us the output from the three commands I asked you to run in #4 and #5, using a known good configuration as I specified in my last post. We already know it's the only rtmpdump on your system. Again, your problem has nothing to do with that. We also already know rtmpdump is not working. It is rare, but you're not the only one who has encountered this issue. However, we're hoping you will be first one to help us diagnose the problem. It may come to nothing, but without that command output we can't even guess at the cause. We can't see what is happening on your machine.

Thanks for doing #5, but you need to do the rest as well. I asked to delete your options file for a reason, I asked you to then re-run your download with for a reason, and I asked you to use for a reason. I need to see what happens when you run get_iplayer in a clean environment that I can see hasn't been altered by you in any way after installation. None of your previous posts show that.

One more thing: Please send your output as attachments to your reply, rather than pasting the rather voluminous text into the post. It will make it easier for me to compare with other logs and spare a lot of scrolling.

Stick with us as we try and work this out for you, it would be great to tie down exactly what is going on here.

So, a few things:

1) I have edited your previous post to remove the text and place it in a text file.

2) Please paste any future large outputs to a text file using a text editor on your computer because it will make things much easier to read and compare and mean it takes less time to get back to you.

You can save the file and upload it to this forum when writing a post by using the 'Choose File' button below the reply box.

Don't use Word or anything like that, it would need to be a plain text editor.

If you need a text editor, I recommend Notepad++ - it's free.

3) When you want to display a command correctly, you can write it out, then select it and once it's selected you can hit the 'code' button above the reply box.

This will wrap the selection in backticks which tells the forum to display the selection as code with a formatted background and it also keeps the exact text you entered.

More suggestions:

1. First, we need to check other methods of invoking rtmpdump from inside perl. Open the get_iplayer command prompt and run these 2 commands:

The formatting of the second command will look a bit odd here because I couldn't include the backticks in the command inside the backticks used to format a code block in this forum. You should still be able to copy and paste it verbatim from your browser to the get_iplayer command prompt

If either of those commands does not return the same output (i.e., the rtmpdump help text) as the earlier perl command I asked you to run, report what - if anything - it does produce as output.

2. If you are running any kind of antivirus package, including Windows Defender, disable it completely to be sure it isn't doing any kind of on-access scanning. Then try to download a programme with get_iplayer. Regardless of whether or not that works, also take a look at your antivirus log (if keeps one) to see if it may have been interfering with rtmpdump or perl.

3. You can try replacing the rtmpdump installed with get_iplayer. I know you did this once before, but you only replaced it with the same version already installed. Try this build instead:

This is a bit of a reach since we know the installed version of rtmpdump on your machine will run outside get_iplayer, but it's quick to test.

4. It's possible there is a library on your system that is incompatible with the version of Perl bundled with the installer. You can roll back to the previous version to test this. First, do a complete uninstall of get_iplayer and delete , as before. Then download and run the previous incarnation of the installer:

It will download the current versions of rtmpdump and other dependencies, but it will install an older version of Perl (5.12.3). It's only speculation that this might help, but I do know there were no reports such as yours with the older version of Perl. It's worth a try.
