Does the BBC throttle radio dowloads

user-1815

Hi All,

When downloading radio programs (I don't download TV) the download speed seems to top out at about 2.8-3.0 Mb/s as reported by get_iplayer.

Our internet is pretty terrible. It normally maxes out at about 3.5Mbps.

So there seems a small gap where, maybe, get_iplayer could go faster. Does anyone have any evidence that BBC radio programs will download faster given a faster connection?

Current plans say that this area should be cabled for FTTP next year. I would like to know if get_iplayer will be able to take advantage of it.

Downloading a (TV) film and a radio program in parallel using two examples of the command line got me 27.5MB/s for the film and 17.0MB/s for the radio program.

This is using a 40/10 fibre (FTTC) internet connection. I'll leave you to judge whether you class that as throttled or just server/bandwidth effects.

Thank you for the report.

TBH that's so far north of my current speeds that I don't really care if is throttled. At least it shows that it's not throttled at or near 3Mbps.
