v3.13 changes in downloaded quality

user-2157

just noticed some poor quality in a program i downloaded.

and it turns out for about the last 4 weeks everything i downloaded has had a big drop in quality.

after investigation;

was all right on the 7/4 but problems after 9/4

file sizes are smaller and resolution dropped from 480 to 400 vert.

i've always used the 'vgood' option, my thinking was i don't have to worry about mode changes, get-iplayer would choose for me, since everything is up-scaled anyway it was the bit rate that counted, and i thought these options use that.

and maybe they do, because it looks like the mode that used to be chosen by 'vgood' has gone;

for 1hr program infos file size estimates are;  hvfxsd1=903MB,hvfxsd2=903MB,hvfxsd3=903MB,hvfhigh1=887MB,hvfhigh2=887MB,hvfhigh3=887MB,hvfxhigh1=538MB,hvfxh
igh2=538MB,hvfxhigh3=538MB

and for the files, my old 660MB/hr no longer exists, its either 890 or 540, and it turns out that 540 is surprisingly inferior to 660MB/hr

in bitrate the drop was from about 1500kbs, but now about 1200kbs,

so, could 'vgood' be adjusted, the current 1200bps is really not good at all.

i have switched up to 'better'.

Upgrade get_iplayer and read the release notes. Bottom line: stick with "better" and use --fps25.

thanks, i see.

re-downloading as we speak, but already get 25fps with 'better', does better sometimes get 50fps and -fps25 stops that?

i will update and it sounds like i should then use 'high'.

Yes, starting with v3.14. Same for "high".
