How do I install get_iplayer?

user-1989

Hello I am new to this.  I would like to know how to use the program using command prompt.  If I install the program I can't find any logicval place to put the PID codes you suggest.

I have downloaded the program and installed it but will need to use my Windows 7 machine.

Which actual program do I need to put into the bin folder so I can do it with a command prompt as you suggest?

I have spent over half an hour just trying to post on this forum - it is not easily navigable if you are visually impaired.

Sorry for any inconvenience and I hope you can help me and tell me exactly which to put into what folder.  All I get is the installer program which is not helpful.  Do I need all the parts or just oneelement?

If I go the the page you suggest,m there is very little detail.  I need this in plain English as to how to get it working please.

Thank you for your help and sorry for any inconvenicnce.

Hello,

You've posted in the Windows forum and mentioned downloading the installer so let's just double check.

Hopefully you found this page:

https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplay...tag/3.06.0

That page has the link to the .exe installer:

https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplay...taller.exe

Hopefully that's what you downloaded and installed.

Now that's installed, you open the programme from your start menu and using the 'get_iplayer' menu entry. There are two entries, one for the command line version and one for the webpvr version. The webpvr version opens a graphical front end in your browser but ultimately is powered by the command line version in the background.

Having opened the get_iplayer command line version form the start menu then you enter the commands in to that prompt.

As you mentioned you wish to stay with the command line version, the guides section of this site has a decent overview of the commands needed. I don't know the severity of your visual impairment but as you mentioned navigating these forums was tricky I'll link the pertinent pages directly below:

Guides overview page: https://squarepenguin.co.uk/guides/

TV guide page: https://squarepenguin.co.uk/guides/tv-download-guide/

Radio guide page: https://squarepenguin.co.uk/guides/radio...oad-guide/

Those guides should cover the main points needed to get started. There are also a couple other pages in the GitHub wiki that should prove useful. I'll link some directly below:

Documentation overview page: https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplay...umentation

FAQ page (very useful): https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/wiki/faq

Option page with detailed list of commands and what they do: https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/wiki/options

Finally the modes page which details the different quality levels and their aliases: https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/wiki/modes

That's a lot to read I admit, but it'll give you a really good overview, especially if you start with the guides linked first.

Mailing list:

I know this forum isn't easy to navigate with a screen reader. It's been mentioned before but I'm constrained by the archaic mybb forum software and it's out of date table structure with limited semantic markup. An update to it has been in the works for years but so far nothing is yet available. Hopefully the main site (https://squarepenguin.co.uk/) is a little easier to find your way around.

As an alternative, you might also try the mailing list. If you're more comfortable with your personal email setup it can be a great way to get info when you get into trouble and the folks over there are very helpful.

The link to the sign up page is:

https://lists.infradead.org/mailman/list...et_iplayer

You can find the archives here:

http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/get_iplayer/

Hopefully this info helps, let me know if you need more or get stuck.

Thank you very much for that reply. I will have a look.

My vision is better than it was by far, but I am trying to get programmes on TV while my dad was in a care home for 3 weeks and they are ones which we would watch together. Now that the BBC has changed their system it is no longer possible the original way with another command prompt programe I used to use.

Ideally what I need to do in a nutshell is:

1: Download and use the command line version
2: which folder do I put this in and what is the name of the file exactly? I usually place it in C:/bin, then run it from command prompt and that is what I would prefer to do.
3: Once I have that setup I can then use as instructed in the txt file.

Thanks again.
James

If that means anything to anyone can this be fixed so that the proper HD version is available?

Very odd but when I played this back on my TV, instead of the usual picture quality from the highest bitrate, this showed up as blurred wshenever the camera moved or when the titles were rolling.

It looked like the old days of modern widescreen TV where it looked like Interlaced video, but was closer together. The Audio was aparently VBR which is also low quality. Shouldn't it be CBR?

If this issue can be resolved in the next update, that would be great. Hope it can.

You probably just need the --fps50 flag to download the 50 fps version. That'll give you the highest quality file/frame rate available from iPlayer. Simply add it to the command you use or save to your preferences as detailed in the guide/documentation I linked to.

If you take a look at the modes page I linked to you'll see it mentions this.

Reading that page will also link you to the full Modes Reference page which also details the different audio levels you will receive with the different quality downloads.
