I have being trying to find an answer to this, but have mostly found older information often including commands that don't seem to be a part of get_iplayer anymore (mode=livetv for example). Is there a way to record what is currently playing on live tv?

I have a feeling I'm either missing something stupidly obvious (didn't want to post this question because I'm sure the answer one way or another is must be out there), or its not possible/not easily done.

Support for recording live tv was removed in v2.98 as noted in the release notes:

Thanks, I read the latest release notes but not the previous versions, then never thought to go back and go through them. Surprised none of the searches I did managed to get me there.
